Want to know how to earn money from a blog? While blogging for profit can take some time, it’s definitely achievable. There’s over 600 million blogs on the internet though, so standing out is the biggest challenge for bloggers.

If you choose a popular topic, or niche, it can take much longer to make money from it. With a less competitive niche you have fewer other bloggers to compete with for attention. Most bloggers will write about something they have an interest in or passion for.

It can take a long time before you are profitable with a blog so it’s worth choosing a topic you have some love for. Otherwise it can be a very long journey! Many blogs aren’t for profit and their owners simply write for a hobby. But if you want to make money from a blog, you’ll need to monetise it somehow.

niche blogging for profit

This can be done with advertising or with affiliate products. Google Adsense offers a simple to use advertising program which lets bloggers place ads on their site. When people click on the adverts, the blogger receives a cut of the advertising fee.

Each click is only worth a tiny amount though, so you need a huge volume of traffic to make this profitable. That’s why many bloggers use affiliate marketing to monetise their blogging. With affiliate marketing you can choose a product to sell on your site, join an affiliate program and get paid for sales you generate.

How To Earn Money From A Blog – Content

Without content though you won’t attract an audience to your blog and you definitely won’t make any money without any visitors. So, content is king. Start by writing about a topic you love. That way, you can continue writing about it for several months or years. With a topic unfamiliar to you, it will likely take longer to research each blog post and it’s less sustainable over the longer term.

I write about affiliate marketing, blogging, and other related things since that’s what floats my boat! So the best advice I can give you is to choose a topic you’re interested in. However, you also want to know how you’re going to monetise your topic. Some topics are more difficult to monetise than others. So you need to find a balance between a topic you love and one which will be profitable.

To help you write SEO friendly content, use a plugin. I use one called Yoast SEO which is a free WordPress plugin. There’s other free plugins which can help you too. See best free blop plugins for WordPress. They will help you with things such as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and sharing your content etc.

How To Earn Money From A Blog – Email Marketing

Email marketing goes hand in hand with earning from a blog. Most bloggers will offer something on their blog to their visitors when they sign up to an email newsletter. This can be a free ebook, a free course of some kind and so on. This allows bloggers to capture their visitor’s email address and follow up with email messages.

It’s from these email messages that they can offer value and build a relationship with their visitors. When they do this well, they can get their subscribers to know, like and trust them. This means they are more likely to make a purchase from an email list when the blogger sends out one of their affiliate links, recommending a product to purchase.

Email marketing works wonders because it allows bloggers to build a long term relationship with their visitors. On a blog, visitors will only stick around for a few minutes. But once on your email list, you can send them messages (and products) over a much longer timeframe. I’ve had email subscribers buy affiliate products even years after subscribing to my email list.

Targeting Keywords With Blog Posts

So that’s how to earn money from a blog! Many bloggers will start blogging in a competitive niche and many niches are already well over subscribed! To stand out among the noise you need to promote and share your content as much as possible, and build backlinks so your posts will rank on the SERPS – search engine results pages.

To give yourself more chance of this happening, you can target long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. These are the keywords which have fewer search results when you look on Google.  To find them you can use Google’s keyword planner tool which is a free tool. Type your main keywords into the planner and you’ll get a heap of other keywords which are being searched for already. Scroll through to the ones which get fewer searches and you’ll find that they are longer tail keyword chains (three or more words long).

These are good for bloggers because if you write some quality content for them, you’ll have more chance of getting your post listed on the first page of Google. It’s not guaranteed of course, but there’s typically less competition for these longer tail keywords. So you have a better chance than with shorter tail phrases which have more competition.

As you continue to write more and more content from a blog, some of your posts will start to appear on Google. Particularly if you use this strategy. This can take weeks, or months depending on how competitive your topic is. See also free traffic for a blogger.

Summary

Earning from blogging can take some time. Especially if you choose a competitive niche to blog in. But blogging can be a fun way to build an income online, too. If you choose high ticket and subscription affiliate products to monetise your blog, it can be more lucrative when you do start to make money from it.

But don’t expect too much from blogging unless you spend a lot of time building it. Expect to work hard for several weeks or even months/years depending on your topic. The good news is that you can ultimately earn a passive income from blogging when you start making sales on complete autopilot. How long this takes will depend on how hard you work at it and the actions you take.

How can you get paid for blog writing? There’s a few ways you can get paid for blog writing. You can become a freelancer and get paid to write blog posts and articles. You can do this by building a reputation on a platform such as Fiverr.com or Upwork.com.

These platforms allow freelancers to create a profile and offer their skills out for outsourcing. Or you can put yourself on online job websites and look for work through the many job platforms. This can be tricky and depending what country you are in there’s a lot of competition for freelancers, and at very low cost. Especially if you outsource to countries such as the Philippines or India, for example.

Here’s a site where you can outsource blogging and other work to people in the Philippines, for example.

Fiverr and Upwork are pretty competitive too, and you’ll find people willing to do blogging and article writing quite cheaply. That’s what you’re up against if you want to become a freelance writer. Many freelancers will offer to work very cheaply (or even for free) in order to build up their reputation on a platform such as Fiverr.com and collect reviews.

Get Paid For Blog Writing – Substack

You can also get paid for blog writing in other ways of course. One popular method of monetising a blog is with a site called Substack.com. With Substack.com you can build a body of work and promote your content online.

Many Substack members then charge a subscription payment to access their content, which can easily be done through the platform. Again, to monetise, this will require a bit of work beforehand in order to build up a reputation for creating content which is worth people paying for, and build an audience who values your content.

Many users of Substack create a lot of content and promote their content online through platforms such as Quora.com to build a following. Once they have a few thousand regular readers, they begin to charge a subscription for their content, or they partially monetise by having a combination of free and paid for content on their Substack platform.

Get Paid For Blog Writing – Affiliate Marketers

Affiliate marketers use blogging in order to sell affiliate products. To become an affiliate you only need to join an affiliate program. Amazon, for example has an affiliate program and anyone can join to monetise the promotion of products from Amazon’s website.

There’s thousands of other kinds of products and services which can be used to monetise a blog too. Some of the best products are digital products because they offer the biggest commissions. Typically physical products will only pay between 1%-10% commission on a product referral. Digital products pay much more, typically from 30%-40% commissions. The most profitable digital products carry recurring commissions and high ticket products.

For bloggers to profit from selling digital products through a blog, they can showcase appropriate products which their visitors might be interested in. The best way to choose a product is by choosing your niche first. Ideally find something you want to write about and monetise when you start generating traffic with a suitable product.

Affiliates can show banners or adverts on their blog, or they can also build an email list of subscribers and sell products through their list.

Get Paid For Blog Writing – Using Adsense/Adverts On A Blog

Another way to monetise a blog is with Google Adsense or similar program. With Google Adsense, you place a code on your blog website which appears as advertising modules. Third parties pay for those adverts and you get a chunk of the payment when visitors click on your ads. The amounts are very small, but with a lot of content and thousands of daily visitors to a blog, this can be a nice passive income for a blogger.

The downside of this strategy is that you will need to do a lot of work before you even get paid a little. But the upside is that when you start getting paid, you’ll be able to earn passively.

Building Free Traffic To A Blog You Own

If you decide to use affiliate marketing or advertising space on a blog, you’ll need a lot of traffic. There’s over 600 million blogs on the internet and it’s growing at a fast pace! Everyone wants a slice of the internet “gold rush” and blogging is a cheap means to make money if you stick with it and go about it in the right way. But even so, it’s hugely competitive blogging if you’re monetising a blog yourself.

Many blog niches are incredibly competitive and especially the top most profitable niches. If you’re going after such a niche, expect to be working on your blog for some time without being paid! Once you start getting traffic, things can change quite quickly. A good strategy for bloggers who attempt to get their traffic from the search engines (Google, Duduckgo.com etc.) is to target and find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. SEO or search engine optimisation is how bloggers get free traffic to their blogs from the SERPS – search engine results pages.

With a lot of free traffic to a well monetised blog platform, you can make a passive income from advertising or affiliate sales. Particularly if you use subscription affiliate products within your product inventory.

Starting A Blog Of Your Own

If you want to build a blog of your own, you can do so on various free blogging platforms. WordPress.com, Blogger.com and Hubpages.com offer a free blog platform for bloggers. However, these platforms seldom appear on the search engines results pages and it can be more difficult to get free traffic. It’s much better to build your own blog on a domain name which you own. This gives you more credibility with the search engines (as well as with your own visitors).

To start your own blog on a website you own, you need to register a domain name. Then you can host it with a hosting provider and install a WordPress site on it. (See this article for details).

WordPress offers one of the most user friendly platforms you can use as a blogger. Plus there’s a tonne of free plugins which can help you optimise your content, share posts and allow easy sharing from your visitors too. See also best free blog plugins for WordPress.

Building A Niche Website For Blogging

A niche website can be built around specific keywords which target your niche in a very particular way. This can give you a bit of an advantage when it comes to getting free traffic more quickly. While it does take some time to rank a website on the search engines, it can happen more quickly with a carefully designed niche website.

By doing some keyword research before building a website, you can build your site around keywords which target your niche. Ideally those keywords should have a good volume of search queries already and be fairly uncompetitive. If you do this well, a website can rank within a month or two for those keywords. For more on this see how to build a niche website.

This website, for example, has been built around a particular set of keywords to give it the chance of more free traffic from the main keywords the site was built on.

The Email List

Bloggers who earn from their blogs by selling affiliate products typically build an email list of subscribers. They do this by offering some kind of freebie giveaway on their blog in exchange for their visitors email. Once someone enters their email to receive the freebie, they join an email list. The blogger can automate messages to deliver regular messages via email.

This is how many bloggers will make money from blogging. They follow up with email messages which promote affiliate products. By offering a value of some kind through their email messages, they build trust with their subscribers. A good blogger will deliver valuable email messages which help their subscribers in some way with a particular problem. See also the power of email marketing.
