I’ve often wondered how top earning affiliates do it but now I know. Since joining an affiliate community since back in 2014, I found a number of top affiliates who have created massive success. I’ve had some moderate success but nothing like what many of the top affiliates have created. The answer? Paid marketing. I have dabbled with paid marketing to an extent and maxed out my credit card running ads on YouTube. That was quite a ride! Luckily I managed to make a whopping affiliate commission of £9K and paid it back off pronto.

But it scared me and I have been a little more careful since. The idea was a bad one and I kind of threw caution to the wind, desperate for success. Really, what affiliates “should” do is carefully craft their advertisements and test and measure with a small budget. Only when you have a profitable campaign should you scale up and spend the big bucks. However, if you’re marketing in a competitive niche and don’t have much capital, it doesn’t leave much room for error. That’s why it’s useful having a high ticket sales funnel which has a number of recurring income products and high, medium and low ticket items to sell. (use the most profitable digital products)

When you have that “ace” up your sleeve, it’s much easier to learn marketing using paid ads. Paid ads are the best strategy because they are scalable. I’ve spent a heap of time building content through blogging. Blogging can give you passive sales but you can’t control your traffic. So it can take a lot of work just to see a little result.

How Do Top Earning Affiliates Do It?

Top earning affiliates also build an email list. This was something I only started doing in 2014. Before that I didn’t know the power of an email list. I was trying to sell directly from a website and collecting visitors only through organic means. That meant I got sporadic traffic at best and most of your website visitors won’t buy.

But when you build an email list you can gain greater control over your traffic. With organic marketing or paid advertising you’re either paying for traffic or working for it. With an email list, you’re in charge! Google can always change their algorithm and paid ads are only getting more expensive. But get your own list of subscribers, send them useful information and you’ll build trust. Trust is something pretty special online and worth its weight in gold (or affiliate sales!).

how does affiliate marketing work

The list is a must if you want to do well at affiliate marketing. It allows you to connect with your prospective customers time and time again. Studies show that most online users will need at least 6-8 “touch points” of a product or website before they make a purchase. This is less so with sites that people trust already such as Amazon, but more so with affiliates who sell more obscure products/services.

An email list lets you connect with your subscribers over a much longer timeframe than is possible only from a website. I’ve made affiliate sales even years after someone has joined my email list. This just couldn’t happen if you don’t collect your website visitors emails and hope to make sales only from a website.

How Top Earning Affiliates Do It – Find A Need

Top earning affiliates find a need and deliver a product to meet that need. They don’t use their own products (at least not initially) and simply partner with the best and most valuable products available. One of my mentors explained how his main success came in the dating niche. He sold a product which helped out men using online dating more effectively.

how do top earning affiliates do it

The need was met with a digital product. The pain point was men struggling to get anywhere doing online dating and the product helped them gain confidence in the dating sphere.

When you can specifically find people who have a certain need/pain point, and deliver products directly to them via online marketing techniques, you can make a killing online!

This starts by defining who you are talking to online. Many online courses miss this vital piece of information. When you know who you’re talking to, you can speak in a language which specifically identifies them and cuts out all the other noise. This is particularly helpful if you’re paying for views. On YouTube, for example, you pay for views after the 30 second mark (this may have changed since I used YouTube). So you want to get rid of the 90% of people who aren’t interested straight away so you don’t pay to show them your ad!

When you know who your customer avatar is (target audience), this is much simpler.

Having The Guts (and the budget)

Now marketing budget aside, it takes a fair amount of gumption to run an advertising campaign and spend money not knowing the outcome. When you see money being sucked into the marketing machine of Google, YouTube, Bing and other marketing platforms, you can see how they are able to make a lot of money very quickly. You need to be careful when spending marketing budget because you can lose a lot very quickly. This is why you test and measure at an affordable cost first, before increasing budget when you’re regularly making profit.

But initially this is very difficult and often this is because of our programming. We are programmed to think of spending wisely and perhaps not even spending at all! With advertising, if you’re never done business before, advertising costs can seem huge and you may want to quickly retreat when you see your marketing budget quickly disappear.

Those who I have seen make a fortune online have the guts to run advertising campaigns. But often they have come from 6 figure incomes too, so they have the budget to run huge campaigns.

Spending $100 To Make $200

Once you’re spending a budget of $100 and making $200 in revenue from affiliate sales you’re golden! You can simply increase your marketing budget now to $1000 and make $2000 and then $10,000 and make $20,000! The difficulty lies in the getting to the point of spending £100 and making $200!

how do top earning affiliates do it

Many affiliates quit because they struggle here. I’ve struggled too to get any consistency with paid ads. The top affiliates don’t quit and they keep on spending budget. If you look at this as lost money, you’re not thinking like a top affiliate. They look at this as an investment of their time and money, rather than lost money. They learn from the ads which fail as much as they learn from ads which win!

By testing and measuring different elements of their advertising campaigns, top affiliates learn how to not only double their money but often quadruple what they spend when they start making sales.

Get Help

The other thing which top earning affiliates have in common; they get mentored! Mentors have already done the hard graft and they know what it takes to succeed online. If you can get close to someone who has done it already, you’re going to save yourself an awful lot of time and energy.

I wasted a lot of time in my early years as an affiliate. I sold the wrong kinds of products (which made peanuts) and used bad marketing tactics which didn’t work very well. When I learned how to leverage the right products (which pay recurring commissions) and use an email list, things magically got better! It wasn’t magic really it was the power of persistence and of finding a good mentor who can steer you in the right direction.

Can you do affiliate marketing with no audience? Well, most affiliates start with no audience, unless they are some sort of famous YouTube’er, or “personality”! But in the large part, affiliates start just where you are, with no kind of social influence.

To sell affiliate products online, you need customers and that means you need an audience to promote your products to. Without one, you’re dead in the water. You simply won’t sell products with no customers! But there’s some good news too. You can acquire an audience as you learn the ropes of becoming an affiliate.

affiliate marketing with no audience

You don’t need to be some kind of guru to do this. You only need to think about how you can serve your customers. There’s a few ways in which affiliates build a customer base. Here’s some of the most popular methods of gaining an audience to sell affiliate products to:

  • YouTube – YouTuber’s build an audience either through creating many videos and uploading them, or running an ad campaign promoting a single video in order to build an email list
  • Email marketing – is one of the best tools for an affiliate (Get an autoresponder free here). It lets you build a huge list of subscribers who you can promote products to while helping them with some problem.
  • Blogging – is a cheap way to attract an audience to your affiliate products through organic website traffic. Traffic is obtained for free from Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.
  • Social media – if you like hanging out on social media platforms, this could be for you. There’s a few social media marketing strategies including both paid and unpaid ones.

Affiliate Marketing With No Audience – Where To Start?

You may be feeling a little overwhelmed at this point wondering where to start. Think about whether you would be happier creating video, text ads, or writing content. Are you more introvert or extrovert? You can start affiliate marketing with no audience, but you’ll need to figure out a method of finding customers somehow, if you’re going to sell any products.

How you go about this will depend on a couple of things:

  • Your marketing budget – are you willing to spend to acquire subscribers/customers?
  • Your personality – would you prefer to create video, blogs, or interact with more people over social media?
  • Your products – what kinds of products would you like to promote as an affiliate?

Getting clear on these three things will definitely serve you as an affiliate marketer. If you don’t want to spend on building up your affiliate business, you are going to need another strategy. Blogging and video creation are two of the main cheaper strategies you can use. But paid marketing is much faster. If you run a paid advert, sending targeted visitors to a landing page, you can build an email list of thousands of subscribers very quickly.

But you’ll need to figure out what offer you’re going to send visitors to. You need to find an affiliate product you can get behind and which is going to give you a profit.

Affiliate Marketing With No Audience – Products

There’s thousands of affiliate products you can promote online as an affiliate marketer. Many of them won’t pay very much either! Amazon has the lowest commission rates in the industry (from 1% for some items). So your product choice is an important decision.

If you rush in, attempting to sell just about anything, you’ll likely find some problems. Digital products tend to pay more (30%-40% typically) and then there’s subscription products and high ticket products which pay recurring commissions and the highest amounts respectively.

The most profitable digital products are those high ticket programs which also carry recurring income products within a product range.

If you’re a blogger, you’re going to need to match your product choice up with your blogging topic. Otherwise, your blog visitors won’t be a good match for your strategy for monetising. If you’re running paid marketing strategies, you’re going to need a product which is valuable enough to cover your ad spend and give you a profit when you make a sale.

Get An Audience Fast Through Building An Email List

One of the best, fastest and simplest ways to build an audience for affiliate marketing is through running a paid campaign and sending people to a landing page. Collect their email address and build a large list of subscribers. Hey presto – you have an audience!

Learn how to do this with a step by step course here.

The email list is one of the best and most cost effective ways to build an affiliate business. However, you need to understand a few things before you build an email list:

  • What products are you going to sell your subscribers?
  • Who is your audience? You’ll need to know this when placing your ads. (See customer avatar worksheet pdf)
  • What benefit/s do they have in joining your list (your lead magnet)
  • What information are you going to offer them in your email marketing campaign?
  • How much can you make per subscriber?

With a low valued offering, you’re obviously going to make less per subscriber than with a high ticket sales funnel, for example. So make sure you’re aware of this when you start running your ads. Advertising online can get expensive so you need to be aware of your potential return on investment before you start!

What are the best ways to make passive income online? While there’s a few ways you can do this, the best way I have found to make a passive income online is through the selling of recurring income products.

But before we get into this topic, here’s just a little about the business model which allows you to do this. Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular online business models and it lets anyone earn an income by selling other people’s products and services online.

You may have heard of affiliate marketing already. Amazon, for example, has an affiliate program which anyone can join. You can then promote products from Amazon through your affiliate link and earn commissions. However, Amazon isn’t the best program to join, since it only pays tiny commissions. There’s better programs which pay recurring income commissions on sales you generate. These types of product are often software or training programs which offer ongoing value to the customer.

best ways to make passive income online

An example of a recurring income affiliate program is Aweber. Aweber is an autoresponder software which is used by online business owners to collect email addresses and deliver email messages automatically. It’s also a pretty vital part of an online business so it’s pretty much essential to have if you want to build an online business.

For this reason, and because it’s a great piece of software, it’s also one of the best things you can promote as an affiliate because it pays recurring commissions. There’s other software programs you can promote too and of course memberships too offer recurring income streams. See also recurring income affiliate programs for more on this.

Best Ways To Make Passive Income Online – Content Marketing

To make a passive income online through selling affiliate products, you need to build an audience. Once you have a nice steady flow of traffic, you can monetise that traffic anyway you want – either through affiliate programs or with advertising. But of course those recurring income programs work very well once you start making the sales. To make these online sales you will need to learn a marketing technique and blogging is one of many marketing strategies used by affiliate marketers.

I like blogging and although it’s a slow process, once you have a lot of content online, that content gets working for you, bringing in sales passively. So you could say that blogging is another way to make passive income online. To do well with blogging you’ll need to create a lot of content. So this isn’t for everyone. Ideally choose a topic in which you can blog about for an indefinite period of time. Depending on how competitive your topic is, it can take weeks, months or even years to generate a serious amount of free traffic, which you can monetise.

When you start making sales through a blog, it’s a great feeling. Not only are you generating traffic for free, but with subscription affiliate products to promote on your blog, you earn a recurring income from each sale!

The High Ticket Sales Funnel

The high ticket sales funnel is one of the best ways to make passive income online as an affiliate. With a high ticket sales funnel, you can earn substantially more than you can with most affiliate programs. As such, it’s far easier to make use of the paid marketing platforms to promote your funnel.

highest paying digital products

A high ticket sales funnel is comprised of multiple products within a product range. This includes:

  • An entry level product – priced to sell (e.g. priced at $30-$50)
  • A mid ticket offer – ($200-$500)
  • A high ticket offer/offers ($2000-$10,000)
  • Subscription products

With such a sales funnel, you can earn from both high margin affiliate products and subscription affiliate products. Not only that but your existing customers can also purchase higher valued products within the sales funnel. This makes a high ticket sales funnel one of the best ways to earn online. With such a product range, you can more easily access a paid marketing platform and make your business profitable. Paid marketing is both fast and scalable, so it’s much quicker route than blogging, if you have the marketing budget and invest in such a funnel.

Commissions can be reinvested into a growing marketing budget, and this makes it more possible to build a large digital business, selling products globally. Learn more about this sales funnel and how to build a profitable online business here.

Autopilot money making websites can make money around the clock through the selling of affiliate products and services. Website building services (such as Shopify) offer to set up money making websites for only a few dollars a month. However, what’s missing from these services is the marketing element. So even with a potentially profitable website, you’re not guaranteed any traffic to it unless you work on your marketing strategy.

So, before you rush in and pay for a money making website, think about how you’re going to attract visitors to it. There’s two main ways you can do this:

  • Using paid marketing – (platforms such as Google Adwords lets you target ads to specific searches)
  • Getting traffic organically – through the search engines (e.g. Google, Bing, etc.)

If you’re going to pay for traffic, it’s much better use of your cash to send that traffic to a landing page, not a generic website. That’s because on a website visitors can browse around and click about. But on a landing page they only have a simple choice: sign up or leave. This means online marketers can tweak their landing pages to optimise it for the best outcome, at the cheapest cost. There’s so many more variables on a website – blog posts, about pages, privacy policy and so on. See also why a landing page is important.

Autopilot Money Making Websites – A Landing Page

A landing page is a web page specifically designed to collect email subscribers to build an email marketing list. An email list is a great way to earn from a website because it gives you many more opportunities to sell something to your subscribers. On a website, most visitors are gone within a few minutes, never to return. But collect their email address and you can build a longer term relationship with them through automated email messages.

Studies show that most people need several touch points on a website before they buy something. Email marketing allows you to do this much more easily and cost effectively than on a website.

Autopilot Money Making Websites
An example of a landing page

So, if you’re going to make money from a website, (using paid marketing), send your visitors to a landing page instead of a website. Send them to a website, with a bunch of information, and they will browse around at their leisure, and you’ll burn through your budget in no time – often without making the sale!

Autopilot Money Making Websites – Free Traffic

But what if you want totally free traffic? If you don’t want to pay for traffic to drive visitors to your website, you’re going to need to use another strategy. To get found organically, you need to create a reason for people to visit your website without running ads.

Blogging is a simple and effective way you can do this. However, blogging takes much longer than running ads before you will see a growing number of visitors. Still, if you are able to create content on a regular basis, there’s nothing quite like free traffic. Depending on your blog niche, you can start generating free traffic within a few months of consistent writing. In a more competitive niche, it will take longer.

Autopilot Money Making Websites

To give yourself a better chance of ranking your content on the SERPS – search engine results pages (e.g. Google, Bing, etc.) you can target long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. The most competitive keywords are much harder to rank for, since they are more competitive. So by finding long tail keywords, you give yourself a better chance of a listing on the first page of Google.

This can take some time and perseverance, and you’re not guaranteed to rank either! So it’s worth promoting your content as you write it however you can. You can share content on social media platforms and with your email list as your list grows. Build back links and reach out for guest posting opportunity to grow your online reach and build your SEO (search engine optimisation) score with Google.

Autopilot Money Making Websites – Building An Email List

Building an email list is a good idea if you want to create an autopilot money making website. Whether you use a free marketing strategy like blogging, or use paid marketing, you can build an email list. A list gives you more control over your traffic. With paid marketing, you need to buy traffic, with blogging and SEO you need to earn it! Once you start building an email list though, you have greater control and you can send your subscribers wherever you want. Whether it’s to a piece of content, or an affiliate product, for example.

To get people to opt into your list, you’ll need to offer something of value on your landing page, or on a form on your blog. Ebooks are great lead magnets and I have used several ebooks to great effect. Here’s another ebook I use as a lead magnet to get visitors to opt into my email list:

Autopilot Money Making Websites

Selling From Your Website

Selling from a website is much easier to do if you collect email subscribers. On a website, they only have a few minutes to buy. From an email list, you can continue to communicate with your audience over a longer time period. I’ve sometimes had subscribers buy affiliate products from my list years after they initially signed up. This just isn’t possible directly from a website. You do of course need something of value to offer your subscribers and visitors to sell.

There’s thousands of affiliate products and services you can choose from to monetise a website. If you’re a blogger, you’ll need to find something which is suitable for your topic and audience.

Physical affiliate products pay less than digital ones and ideally have a subscription affiliate product to sell which pays out recurring commissions. That way, you stand to earn a lot more for each sale you make. You can also sell high ticket affiliate products from a website which pay out the largest commissions. See also the most profitable digital products.

You can also monetise a website through advertising space. Google Adsense is one of the more popular platforms which lets you place ads on your content. When someone clicks on your ad, you earn a small amount of advertising revenue. If you’re going down this route you’ll need to become a blogger, since it’s not worth paying for advertising to get these tiny amounts. See also Adsense alternatives.

How long does it take to grow a blog? Growing a blog can take some time and effort and you should expect to work consistently at it for 1-2 years before seeing the results you want from it. Although the time it takes to build up a consistent readership will vary from one niche to another, being consistent and creating content consistently is your best course of action. There’s several other variables to consider though too which will affect your ability to grow your audience as a blogger:

  • The quality of your content – Google looks for a number of signals to determine this
  • Back links – over time you should find back links to your content are naturally growing. This is a major signal to the search engines and will determine your ranking position on the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages).
  • How well you promote your content – writing blogs is not the end of your work, you also need to actively promote each piece of content you create
  • Time on page – Google watches your visitors and uses this information to see how people respond to your content – do they click away, do they return etc.?
  • Your niche and the relative competitiveness of it

The most important part of blogging is your content. Write high quality content and your posts will stand up longer over your competition. If your posts aren’t high quality, fewer people will see them, there will be less people linking to them and Google will likely down-rank them too. The next best thing you can do besides write (consistently) high quality content is blog promotion.

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog?

Of course a single blog post, promoted in the right way can give you a sale, if you get lucky. But if you want to attain a consistent income from blogging, you’ll need more than the odd “one hit wonder”! To make blogging a consistent source of income you’ll need a lot of regular sales and this starts with regular visitors. Unless you’re paying for visits you’ll need a lot of content on your blog to start ranking on the SERPS (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Duckduckgo.com etc).

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog
From James Clear’s Atomic Habits

Once your blog posts start gaining traction, you should see more traffic, leads and more sales, depending on how you monetise your site. (See how to earn money from a blog.) But this comes after a lot of hard work. Depending on your niche, and how competitive it is, you might need to post regularly for several months or even several years. In a more competitive niche it’s going to take longer. If there’s little competition, your blog can take off much sooner.

But it’s always better to take charge of your blog promotion rather than relying on Google to rank your posts. It may not rank your content at all, and in any case it will usually take some months before you are established. Google have a “sandbox” where they hold newer websites “on hold” before ranking them at all, so it can take a few months of blogging before you get recognised.

To speed up the process you should be actively promoting your posts as you publish them. Use an SEO plugin, social media share buttons and automated posters to syndicate your blog posts automatically. See best free blog plugins for WordPress for a list of them.

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog? Blog Topic

So, if growing a blog to the point of continuous (free) traffic, consistent leads and consistent sales is the objective, you’re going to need to be persistent. There’s 600 million blogs on the internet which means in most subjects you’re going to come up against a lot of competition. The more competitive your topic is, the harder you’re going to need to work, and for longer!

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog

So the choice of your blog topic is an important one. Choose a topic you’re unfamiliar with and remember you’re going to need to research each post you write. Choose a topic you’re not interested in and this will get tiresome pretty quick. So if you’re going to sustain the necessary output needed to succeed with a blog, you need to choose a topic you can write about for a good deal of time. If you don’t think you can continue creating content in a subject area for at least 6 months, and perhaps longer, it’s probably not a good choice.

Choosing a topic close to your heart, or that you’re passionate about is the best advice here. But remember also that if you want to profit from your blogging, you’re going to need to monetise it in some way too. This can be done in any niche, and you can use advertising and affiliate marketing. But certain niches will definitely be more profitable than others.

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog? – Email Marketing

If you monetise your blog with affiliate sales, you’re going to want to get an autoresponder service. Build an email list from your blog and it can be much more profitable. Get a free autoresponder for affiliate marketing and build an email list of subscribers. With an email list, you can build a longer term relationship with your blog visitors.

How Long Does It Take To Grow A Blog

By automating the sending of email messages, you can drip feed your subscribers with useful information while selling your affiliate products to them. On a blog, most visitors are gone in minutes, never to return! So the email list is one of the best ways to make the most out of your blog visitors, by offering them something valuable in exchange for their email address.

Small Wins

You can see some traction quite quickly if you’re regularly posting content and sharing it. But on the whole, it will likely take several months or years before you see your regular free visitors growing exponentially. When this happens buy yourself a bottle of champagne!

blogging growth per blog post

But until this happens it can be a slow and daunting battle building and sharing your content over and over again. Make habits out of doing this and over time you will be rewarded for it, provided your content is helpful. You also should identify those keywords in your niche which have the least competition. By targeting low competition keywords which have fewer competing websites, you can more easily pick up rankings for your content.

The key to sticking with it through blogging is by rewarding yourself for the small wins. It doesn’t happen overnight but if you only focus on what you can do each day, in several months you can have a heap of content which is effectively doing the work for you! The small wins might be:

  • Creating your first article and publishing it on your blog
  • Sharing your content on a social media platform
  • Automating the sharing process – use a plugin such as Postplanner.com or Revive Old Posts
  • Getting a hit on your website (Use a counter so you can see this)
  • Getting a lead onto your email autoresponder
  • Making your first sale

Summary

So, how long does it take to grow a blog? The answer to this question will depend on what you ultimately want from your blogging. If you’re after a steady stream of income from blogging, this can take longer than getting a steady stream of visitors. Depending on your niche and how much time you can give to blogging, it can take several months or several years.

There’s no definite answer because everyone has a different set of circumstances to build their blogging time around and not everyone will want to blog about the same things. In a less competitive niche, you can see a lot of traffic within a few weeks, if you’re posting regularly and sharing those posts. In a more competitive area it will definitely take longer.

The best advice I’ve had is to choose a topic I you’re passionate about and which you can consistently blog about for an indefinite period of time. Choose a topic you’re uninterested in and it will become a chore, especially after a few months!

Is blogging profitable? There’s over 600 million blogs on the internet and not all of them are profitable. In fact many bloggers only blog for fun, rather than for profit. Still, you can make money from blogging if you do it for long enough and learn how to monetise a blog. But the key to building a profitable blog is to firstly get a lot of blog visitors coming to your site on a regular basis.

Without traffic, you’ll never make a blog profitable and even if you do have traffic, there’s still no guarantee you can make money. Most blog visitors are looking for information. So with an information blog, you only attract visitors who are looking for titbits!

However, many affiliates will write reviews about products. These attract people who are looking to buy something. If visitors are very targeted like this they are likely to buy something. You can then send visitors to affiliate products which are linked to your content in some way. A review website is just one way to do this.

Is Blogging Profitable – Affiliate Marketing

Many bloggers will monetise their blog content with affiliate products and services. Affiliate marketing is an online business model in which third parties can get paid for referring people to goods and services online. As a blogger myself, I send people to products which I have found helpful. When someone buys from one of my affiliate links, I earn a commission based on the sale.

Affiliate products can be found in almost any niche. So whatever topic you care to blog about, you can usually find affiliate products to promote which are suitable for your target audience. The target audience for affiliate marketing is an important thing to understand. Your target audience is the small section of the online marketplace who will actually want to buy your products.

Get to understand the needs of your audience and you will become better at selling affiliate products from a blog.

As your content grows so should your audience

Is Blogging Profitable – How Long To Make A Blog Profitable?

How long it takes to make money from a blog is the million dollar questions. It depends on many factors such as:

  • Your blog topic and the relative competition
  • How often you write and the quality and quantity of your content
  • The products you choose and how you sell them
  • How people respond to your content
  • How well you actively promote your content
  • Whether your content ranks on the search engines

Those are just a few of the factors which will effect whether you can make a blog profitable or not. Ideally choose a topic you can create a lot of content on for an indefinite period of time. Some blogs will take off sooner than others. In a very competitive niche, expect to have to work at it for much longer than in one with very little competition.

You can become profitable with a blog within 6 months. Or it can take much longer. It really depends on so many things that it’s impossible to say definitively.

Aligning A Blog Topic With A Profitable Affiliate Product

There’s a couple of main ways to make a blog profitable. You can use advertising on a blog (e.g. Google Adsense) or you can use affiliate products. These are the most popular ways to monetise a blog if you don’t have your own product, business or service to offer. Your choice of affiliate products to promote from a blog and how you go about it will have a lot to say in whether you make it profitable or not. Of course you also need traffic to a blog and this should be your priority.

is blogging profitable

But before running in a building a tonne of content, it’s worth finding a good affiliate product to align with your blog. So if your blog is about Yoga, for example, you’ll want to find a Yoga related product which you think is hugely valuable. Make sure you pick wisely since there’s a lot of affiliate products which don’t really sell that well.

You can also sell a lot of physical affiliate products without really making very much. Amazon, for example pays very little in terms of commission to affiliates (as little as 1%). Digital products pay much more – typically between 30% and 40%.

The most profitable digital products to sell from a blog are those which offer high ticket affiliate commissions. High margin products to sell online are the best for profit, assuming you can find one in your niche. You should also consider selling subscription affiliate products too. With a subscription sale, you stand to continue earning from it long after you make the sale.

Email Marketing – Leveraging A Blog

Once you have build up an audience through blogging, it doesn’t necessarily make it profitable straight away. You still need to turn those visitors into buyers if you’re monetising with affiliate marketing. If you’re using advertising instead, you’ll need a huge volume of visitors. It’s wise to try different things out and see what works the best. But nothing works without traffic, so that should be the priority for a blog. Traffic is attracted by creating a lot of content and keeping doing so for a long time. But you also need to actively promote your content too. Don’t rely entirely on Google to find your content, because it may not do so.

To get more from your traffic it’s worth offering a giveaway on your blog. With a giveaway, you can collect your visitors details and send them follow up messages. This extends the time with which you can encourage a blog visitor to make a purchase. On a blog, most visitors are gone within a few minutes. But capture their email address on your blog and you can keep in touch for months, and even years.

Want to know how to earn money from a blog? While blogging for profit can take some time, it’s definitely achievable. There’s over 600 million blogs on the internet though, so standing out is the biggest challenge for bloggers.

If you choose a popular topic, or niche, it can take much longer to make money from it. With a less competitive niche you have fewer other bloggers to compete with for attention. Most bloggers will write about something they have an interest in or passion for.

It can take a long time before you are profitable with a blog so it’s worth choosing a topic you have some love for. Otherwise it can be a very long journey! Many blogs aren’t for profit and their owners simply write for a hobby. But if you want to make money from a blog, you’ll need to monetise it somehow.

niche blogging for profit

This can be done with advertising or with affiliate products. Google Adsense offers a simple to use advertising program which lets bloggers place ads on their site. When people click on the adverts, the blogger receives a cut of the advertising fee.

Each click is only worth a tiny amount though, so you need a huge volume of traffic to make this profitable. That’s why many bloggers use affiliate marketing to monetise their blogging. With affiliate marketing you can choose a product to sell on your site, join an affiliate program and get paid for sales you generate.

How To Earn Money From A Blog – Content

Without content though you won’t attract an audience to your blog and you definitely won’t make any money without any visitors. So, content is king. Start by writing about a topic you love. That way, you can continue writing about it for several months or years. With a topic unfamiliar to you, it will likely take longer to research each blog post and it’s less sustainable over the longer term.

I write about affiliate marketing, blogging, and other related things since that’s what floats my boat! So the best advice I can give you is to choose a topic you’re interested in. However, you also want to know how you’re going to monetise your topic. Some topics are more difficult to monetise than others. So you need to find a balance between a topic you love and one which will be profitable.

To help you write SEO friendly content, use a plugin. I use one called Yoast SEO which is a free WordPress plugin. There’s other free plugins which can help you too. See best free blop plugins for WordPress. They will help you with things such as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and sharing your content etc.

How To Earn Money From A Blog – Email Marketing

Email marketing goes hand in hand with earning from a blog. Most bloggers will offer something on their blog to their visitors when they sign up to an email newsletter. This can be a free ebook, a free course of some kind and so on. This allows bloggers to capture their visitor’s email address and follow up with email messages.

It’s from these email messages that they can offer value and build a relationship with their visitors. When they do this well, they can get their subscribers to know, like and trust them. This means they are more likely to make a purchase from an email list when the blogger sends out one of their affiliate links, recommending a product to purchase.

how to earn money from a blog

Email marketing works wonders because it allows bloggers to build a long term relationship with their visitors. On a blog, visitors will only stick around for a few minutes. But once on your email list, you can send them messages (and products) over a much longer timeframe. I’ve had email subscribers buy affiliate products even years after subscribing to my email list.

Targeting Keywords With Blog Posts

So that’s how to earn money from a blog! Many bloggers will start blogging in a competitive niche and many niches are already well over subscribed! To stand out among the noise you need to promote and share your content as much as possible, and build backlinks so your posts will rank on the SERPS – search engine results pages.

To give yourself more chance of this happening, you can target long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. These are the keywords which have fewer search results when you look on Google.  To find them you can use Google’s keyword planner tool which is a free tool. Type your main keywords into the planner and you’ll get a heap of other keywords which are being searched for already. Scroll through to the ones which get fewer searches and you’ll find that they are longer tail keyword chains (three or more words long).

how to earn money from a blog

These are good for bloggers because if you write some quality content for them, you’ll have more chance of getting your post listed on the first page of Google. It’s not guaranteed of course, but there’s typically less competition for these longer tail keywords. So you have a better chance than with shorter tail phrases which have more competition.

As you continue to write more and more content from a blog, some of your posts will start to appear on Google. Particularly if you use this strategy. This can take weeks, or months depending on how competitive your topic is. See also free traffic for a blogger.

Summary

Earning from blogging can take some time. Especially if you choose a competitive niche to blog in. But blogging can be a fun way to build an income online, too. If you choose high ticket and subscription affiliate products to monetise your blog, it can be more lucrative when you do start to make money from it.

But don’t expect too much from blogging unless you spend a lot of time building it. Expect to work hard for several weeks or even months/years depending on your topic. The good news is that you can ultimately earn a passive income from blogging when you start making sales on complete autopilot. How long this takes will depend on how hard you work at it and the actions you take.

Wondering how to sell other people’s products online? A clever business model known as affiliate marketing allows anyone to join a program and promote products through your unique affiliate link. When someone makes a purchase through your link, you earn a commission based on the sale. The product/platform owner pays you a commission.

Amazon, for example has a affiliate (or partner) program which anyone can join. Once you join you’ll get access to the affiliate “portal” and you can get your links. Link to any product on Amazon and they’ll pay you for sales generated through your links.

Amazon isn’t known for its generosity to affiliates however and they offer some of the lower commission rates available. So despite Amazon’s popularity and the fact that most people trust the site to buy from, it’s not the best solution for affiliates. So what is the best solution if you want to earn through selling other people’s products?

How To Sell Other Peoples Products Online

How To Sell Other People’s Products Online – Digital Products

Physical products like you will find on Amazon typically pay the least amount in commission. Amazon pays between 1% and 10% for most products you’ll find on the site. But digital products will pay much more. Clickbank.com and JVZoo.com for example are online marketplaces for digital products. They typically pay much more per sale than physical products and usually from 30%-40% commission.

Digital products don’t have the many costs associated with the delivery of physical products. You can download a digital products from anywhere in the world totally for free! So these savings can be passed to the people who promote them – affiliates!

How To Sell Other People's Products Online

Digital products can also offer ongoing value. Digital software products and online education products can carry ongoing membership fees and some of them pass these on to the affiliates too. This means if you choose to promote subscription affiliate programs you can earn recurring commissions from each sale, potentially for years with the right products and customers.

There are also high ticket affiliate marketing products which pay much larger commissions than average. These are definitely a good idea and allow you to use a larger marketing budget. When you’re getting started in affiliate marketing they can give you more opportunity to find your feet. When a large ticket commission comes in it can be re-used in your marketing budget and you can grow your business more quickly.

Some of the most profitable digital products to sell online offer high ticket recurring income products within a product range.

How To Sell Other People’s Products Online – How To Do The Selling

There’s many ways to sell affiliate products online and not every affiliate uses the same approach. Some will create written or video content, such as this article. Others will build an email list of subscribers and email their list and promote products with links in their messages.

How To Sell Other Peoples Products Online

The fastest way to build an email list is through using paid marketing techniques. There’s a few marketing platforms you can use if you go down this path:

  • Google Adwords
  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • Bing
  • Etc.

Some of these strategies are better than others but your choice of promotion method will depend on your own preferences and your marketing budget (if you have one). If you don’t have a large marketing budget to build an email list or send thousands of visitors to an offer, you can choose a cheaper promotion strategy.

Cheap strategies tend to involve building content: blogging and video blogging for example. This can take some time and your success with any given strategy will depend on how committed you are, your choice of products and your ability to keep going and overcome any difficulties you encounter.

Selling Through Blogging

Bloggers build a lot of content and over time their content gets shown on the search engine results pages (SERPS) of Google and other search engines. It can take several months or even years before a blogger makes their blog a full time income source.

The time it takes will vary from one person to another and depending on how competitive the topic is which they choose to blog about. This applies also to building a YouTube channel too or using content to drive online affiliate sales.

Paid Marketing

Marketers who use paid platforms to drive traffic can build an affiliate business much more quickly, given a large enough marketing budget and the patience to learn this skill. Affiliates who use this strategy will send targeted website traffic to a landing page where they collect subscribers who join their email list. With an email list you can send automated messages to your subscribers on a regular basis and promote affiliate products through your links.

Learn more about affiliate marketing by signing up to my email list here

You can also send paid traffic directly to your affiliate offers. However this can be frowned upon by some marketing platforms and there can be a lot more wastage with ad budget by doing this. Collecting email subscribers gives you a longer time period to engage your audience. Whereas if you send them directly to a sales page or an affiliate offer, they can simply leave never to return.

Once you get people to subscribe to an email list which you own, you can continue to deliver messages to them over weeks, months and even years. I’ve had subscribers purchase products even years after they signed up to join my email newsletter.

Social Media Platforms

There’s other methods of selling affiliate products too and many affiliates will use their social media presence to build a following. By setting up your profile to showcase your offer, you can lead people towards your landing page or website to build a traffic source. You can choose both paid methods and unpaid social media marketing strategies.

Unpaid methods will typically take longer but are more suitable for anyone without a marketing budget. If you use paid marketing methods, be prepared for some of your budget being used up in the learning of the skill. Paid marketing is faster and more scalable, but not every paid ad you run will work!

Free traffic for a blogger can be found through creating content which ranks on the search engine results pages (SERPS). However, depending on the topic of your blog, it may be quite competitive. If there’s thousands of other blogs within the same topic, it’s harder to rank your content.

To compete against the more competitive topics is difficult to say the least. So a clever trick is to look for and find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty.

You can use any keyword tool to do this. Google offer a free keyword planner you can access here. You’ll need an Adwords account to access it. Once you have access to the tool, type in your main keyword. The planner will give you multiple keyword ideas which relate to your main “seed” keyword. To find those which offer the least competition, scroll to the end of the list where you’ll find longer tail keywords which have fewer monthly searches.

free traffic for a blogger

Now, you might be thinking, fewer monthly searches? I want the keywords which get thousands of monthly searches to give me more traffic. But those top keywords with the most views also have the most competition. So ranking content for them will be incredibly difficult. Instead, go for the “low hanging fruit”. These are the keywords which have fewer competing website results on Google. As such, you have a much better chance of ranking for them in the SERPS. Once you start ranking your content, you can get free traffic to your blog.

At first it may only be the odd click, here and there. But if you consistently create more and more content, using this strategy, your blog traffic will grow as more of your articles rank.

Free Traffic For A Blogger – Blog Post Promotion

Of course this strategy takes some time. Depending on your blog niche, it can take months and it can take years before you are flooded with free traffic. But if you want free traffic, you have to pay the price. That price is the discipline of continually creating content over the longer term.

Just creating content isn’t enough either! You also need to actively promote your content too. Publish your content and share it as much as possible. Use your email list and send new posts to your subscribers. Post on social media platforms and anywhere and everywhere you can.

free traffic for a blogger

Link back to your posts from other websites and from your new content. Over time, the backlinks you generate will be a signal to the search engines as to what your content is about and how to rank it. As visitors find your posts, they will link to them and share them too, if your content is of high quality. So the better you can make your content, the more likely it will naturally thrive over time.

I use an SEO tool to help me write my blog posts too. Yoast SEO is a great free tool which anyone with a WordPress blog can use. It helps you write SEO (search engine optimised) friendly blog posts and gives them a better chance of a first page ranking.

Free Traffic For A Blogger – Timescale

How long it will take to have a steady stream of visitors will depend on a few things:

  • The quality of your content
  • How well you promote it
  • Your SEO
  • Blog post length
  • How people perceive it – bounce rate, natural links etc.
  • Your domain age and authority
  • Backlinks to your blog
  • Your niche and the relative competition

Google has thousands of signals which it uses to determine the quality of a blog post and how to rank it. But don’t forget there’s other search engines too such as Bing, Yahoo and Ducduckgo.com. These search engines will pick up your content too, and often you’ll rank more easily on them than Google. So although it can take some time before you are swimming in free visitors, it’s worth persevering with this strategy.

In a competitive niche, it will take much longer to get traffic than in an uncompetitive one. So ideally pick a topic in which you have a passion. There’s a couple of major benefits of doing this:

  • It’s easier to write about something you know about and have a passion for
  • You’ll be able to sustain the project much longer than with a difficult topic you have no interest in.

Free Traffic For A Blogger – Critical Mass

When your website traffic takes off, you will see a sudden uptick in your visitors. If you set your website up with a good lead magnet, you’ll be able to turn (some of) those visitors into leads and sales.

However, this doesn’t happen as quickly as you might like. In fact, the progress of a blog isn’t linear like you may expect. Instead there’s a time lag, or a dip. James Clear calls this phenomenom the “valley of disappointment” as you can see in the picture from his book Atomic Habits.

free traffic for blogger

Sadly this means many bloggers will quit on this journey, especially if they have chosen a difficult topic in which they have little interest. But if you persevere past the point in which you think is necessary, and keep going, you should find an exponential rise in traffic, leads and sales.

How many blog posts does it take to get traffic? Well this depends. You might see a jump in traffic quite quickly with only a few posts in one particular (uncompetitive) niche. But in another more competitive one, it might take hundreds of posts and thousands of backlinks.

This is why it’s important to choose your niche wisely and plan for the longer term. Don’t simply look for the most profitable niche for blogging, since you may be unable to get traction if it doesn’t suit your interests.  If you don’t see yourself writing more than a few posts, you’re probably in the wrong niche. Think about spending several months if not years writing continuously on your topic and you have an idea about what it takes.

Excitement Of Passive Traffic & Therefore Sales!

There’s something very exciting and rewarding about getting free traffic from the search engines. When you can visualise this happening, even when you have no traffic, it’s a huge motivator and has kept me blogging for years! Once people start seeing your content, they share it and link to it too. This has the effect of improving your SEO and you jump up the search listings on the SERPS. As more people see your blogs, more do the same and this has a compounding effect.

The trouble is there’s a heap of work you need to do to get to this point and most people won’t stick with it that long when there’s nothing to show for all their work! Stick at it because there’s some exciting rewards if you do! Sales on autopilot was always my goal as an affiliate, and with free traffic. I just didn’t realise how much work was actually required to make it a reality.

Once you start making a regular income from your blogging, it gives you more faith and trust that it can happen. When this happens you give more time to creating more and more blog posts. The added motivation and the compounding SEO means you’re now creating content at a faster rate, (and hopefully of higher quality too).

This tips the balance and you will soon be on your way to replacing a full time income from blogging! When this happens, you’ve made it! You can blog full time or part time and the previous work you have done continues to draw in traffic, leads and sales, while you create more and more content. You can also link to older content as you go, thereby improving your SEO and driving your content further up the SERPS.

An online education affiliate program is one of the best things you can promote as an affiliate. With education programs, you can earn recurring commissions, and high ticket commissions through selling subscription products and high value training.

With the right program (and customers), people will stick with it for years which means you’ll continue to earn regular commissions (per customer) if there’s a subscription product to sell.

online education affiliate program

If there’s a product range too, you’ll be earning from members who upgrade their account. This can happen even years after they have initially bought the basic product too. So long as you have referred the customer initially, your affiliate link is forever tied to that customer within the product range.

But there’s an even better reason for investing in an online education affiliate program yourself, too. That is, for your own development and training! As an affiliate, educating yourself on the various marketing techniques, mindsets and principles is the best thing you can do to lay the foundations of your future affiliate success.

Without help and support, it’s much more difficult to be successful as an affiliate. Especially considering that around 95% of affiliates will drop out completely.

There’s many reasons for this. Some affiliates don’t give it long enough before quitting, they promote the wrong products or use the wrong marketing tactics. Many have too high an expectation for little work or the wrong money mindset or work ethic to make it as an affiliate.

Online Education Affiliate Program – Modern Wealthy

The Modern Wealthy offers online education for affiliates and business owners who are wanting to create a profitable online business from scratch and/or require training on marketing, mindset, etc.

online education affiliate program

You’ll learn the fundamentals of marketing, target audience, finding a niche and a host of other important resources and strategies. You can also join a community of other marketers and business owners. Finding others who are on a similar journey to you as an affiliate is pretty important.

As Jim Rohn puts it, “You are the average of the 5 people you spend most time with”. So unless you’re surrounded with the people who you want to become like, your “crowd” may be holding you back.

The Modern Wealthy affiliate program also offers a number of products you can promote as an affiliate including:

  • A product range – gives you more opportunity for sales (per customer)
  • A built in sales team – closing sales on your behalf
  • Subscription products – (earn recurring commissions from memberships)
  • High ticket affiliate products – including personal one on one affiliate marketing coaching and mentoring

Why Use A Program With A Product Range?

A product range gives an affiliate more opportunity to earn commissions from existing customers. With most affiliate products you only have one product to sell.

This means you need to keep on selling that product again and again in order to make commissions. But with a product range, which offers multiple offers within a single sales funnel, you can offer more valuable products to existing customers.

online education affiliate program

You also can earn commissions from recurring commissions (memberships) within your high ticket sales funnel. See also the most profitable digital products.

A typical sales funnel will pay around $1 per subscriber (per month), depending on your marketing and product. But a high ticket sales funnel with multiple products in a range will pay much more, typically $5 per month per subscriber.

This has a couple of main implications:

  • It’s easier to be profitable with such a product range
  • There’s more opportunity for using paid marketing (making it more easily scalable)

Why Join An Online Education Affiliate Program?

As an affiliate, your job is to promote and sell other people’s products and services online. If you don’t do that, you don’t get paid. So the ability to sell products online is key. Joining an education program which teaches this ability is therefore vital to your success, but also for the success of people who you promote your products to.

So joining an education program you believe in has a two-fold benefit:

  • If you believe in a product, your marketing becomes more authentic – you sell more products!
  • You’ll learn fundamental marketing principles which will help you become a better marketer.

Educating yourself in marketing is the best thing you can do as an affiliate for your continued growth and development. Not only do you need to learn marketing techniques, but you need to grow and develop yourself to become better at what you do continually.

An online education program aimed at affiliates can be helpful to you and your audience. Since affiliate marketing can be a life changing pursuit, products which help achieve this are super valuable and very popular too.
