What are zero search volume keywords and how can you benefit from them? A zero search volume keyword refers to keywords which receive very little to no search volume every month. Using Google’s keyword search tool, you can find them at the bottom of the search results. Here’s the results from a simple Google keyword search using the terms “digital products”:

Zero Search Volume Keywords

At the very top you see the term “digital products” has a huge monthly search volume, currently at 22,200 monthly searches for this term. But scroll through the search results (or click on the “Avg. monthly search volume” tab) and at the bottom of the pile you’ll find lesser searched for terms. These terms will usually have 10 or less searches per month.

Sometimes you will even find keywords which show zero monthly searches. This means, Google doesn’t recognise any monthly searches being made for that particular term.

These low-volume keywords are often discarded by content creators because they are perceived as having little to no search volume, and therefore worthless. However, keyword tools need a certain amount of data before the keyword can register in their database.

Zero Search Volume Keywords: Benefits

According to Google, 92% of all search queries are long-tailed keywords (source). By finding these longer tail keywords, (and creating content for them) we can more easily rank for them on Google (and other search engines). Of course there are other search engines too: Bing, Yahoo, Duckduckgo.com just to name a few. These search engines bring in traffic too, from the same keywords.

A huge benefit of long tail keywords with low search volume is the lack of competition for content. With very competitive terms, you’ll see thousands of other websites have created content for those particular terms. But with long tail keywords with low search volume, there’s far less. This means we have a greater chance of ranking our content.

To find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty, we only need to look at the bottom of the pile for these searches with 10 or less monthly searches. Then we can have a look on Google with a simple search to check out the competition.

There’s another main benefit too of finding longer tail keywords which have less competition. Long tail keywords are also very specific. So if you can find specific searches which relate to your product/service, you can create content which is more likely to attract a buying customer. Short tail keywords are more generic and less likely to be “buyer” keywords, with a strong buying intent behind them.

Zero Search Volume Keywords: Strategy

Here’s a simple strategy to find and create content for zero search volume keywords.

  • Type your main keyword idea into Google’s keyword planner (1-2 words)
  • Click on the Average monthly searches tab until the search volume reduces to the minimum amount (usually this is 0-10 monthly searches)
  • Pick out good keywords which relate to your topic/service
  • Type into Google for a normal search and a “phrase match” search (in quotes)
  • Create content for the ones which show promise.

When you type your keyword into Google on a desktop computer you should see a number come up at the top of the search results. This denotes the competing websites/pages for that particular term. You can also do the same search as a phrase match (see picture below).

The numbers will give you an idea about the relative competition of the search term you are using. Lets do another example using a much longer (and therefore less competitive) keyword phrase. We can find these by typing the term “long tail keyword” into Google’s keyword planner and looking for the zero search volume keywords. In this case, the lowest search volume comes up as 0-10:

Go back to Google and do a normal and phrase match search to see how many websites are competing for these terms:

As you can see, there’s very few competing pages for the phrase match, which might mean we can easily get a piece of content to the top of Google using this term.

Creating Content For Your Keyword

Once you find a good keyword you want to rank for, and which is targeted well for your business/service/product, you can create some awesome content for it. Use an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) plugin which will help you get the most out of it. You should also make your article as good as you can, writing at least 1000 words, more if you can. The better your article is, the longer it is likely to survive against any competition.

Good content is evergreen and will stand the test of time. If you’re going to the trouble of creating content, make it as good as possible. Use your keywords in your title, description and headings. A good plugin I use is Yoast SEO which helps you do all this to help you optimise it.

More on this topic can be found on the article “find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty“. If you’re an affiliate on a low budget, or in a competitive field, this can be a great strategy to get traffic to your website free. This might be relevant if you’re promoting the most profitable digital products because you’ll probably find yourself in a competitive field. To build your business cheaply, this is a great long term strategy which can, over time give you a lot of free traffic.
