Wondering how to make a profitable website? There’s a few ways you can generate profit from a website, and you don’t even need your own products/service. You can use a business model known as affiliate marketing, or drop shipping. Both businesses allow you to create a website and sell other people’s products from it.
There’s loads of platforms which will do this for you too (at least the storefront), and even populate your website with a bunch of stuff you can automatically sell. But alas, it’s not all so easy. There’s a catch! While your shiny new website can quickly be technically set up for profit, with products on the digital “shelves”, without a huge number of visitors, and the right kinds of visitors at that, nothing will be sold.
You’ll make exactly zero. So before buying that Shopify store, (and paying your subscription) or setting up that Amazon e-commerce, or even an Etsy store, think about how you are going to get traffic!
How To Make A Profitable Website: Traffic
Before we talk about setting up a profitable website, there’s the small matter of traffic. Yes, people need to come to your site and make the purchase, if it’s going to become profitable. This is a big deal and often one which is left to the very end of the sales pitch: after you have invested in the shiny new toy! If you already have a physical store, and lots of customers, it’s a different matter. But lets say you’re an absolute beginner and are starting from scratch.
You buy a e-commerce platform and set up your digital store. But where are the customers? You’ll need to either pay to get traffic to your site, or generate content to get traffic organically. To make a profitable website you need these basic elements:
- A site with something to sell, (something of value, which your audience wants)
- A means of attracting that audience, in great numbers (through paid or organic traffic)
The fastest way to do this is of course with paid advertising. But there’s no guarantee that your ads won’t cost more than you can make from the site! In a competitive niche, ads cost more.
How To Make A Niche Website, And Get Free Traffic
A long time ago, I joined an online course which taught me how to generate niche websites. This website is a niche website. If you look at the domain name, you’ll see it is laser focused! A niche website is built around specific keywords which relate to the products you are going to sell. So if your products relate to the fitness industry, for example, you would build your site around keywords related to fitness. I sell digital training courses related to the affiliate marketing and online business niche. So this website allows me to attract those kinds of visitors.
The target audience is a key element to this strategy. Without a well focused target market, you could spend some time and still not get the result you want. By understanding your customer avatar, you can get much more focused in on who it is you want to attract to your website.
Once you know who you want to attract, it’s time to do some keyword research and find out what your prospective customers are searching for online.
To do this, you can use Google’s keyword planner to find long tail keywords with low SEO difficulty. When you find a suitable keyword, you can build a website around it.
There’s quite a lot of work involved in this process, and it’s not for everyone. Learn more about this strategy in this article: how to build a niche website.
How To Make A Profitable Website: Blogging
Blogging is another strategy you can use to generate free, organic traffic to your website. With the right audience you can then monetise with affiliate products or advertising. Depending on your particular blog topic, it can take months or even years to get traction from a blog. It’s definitely not as fast as using paid marketing. But it is cheap, and over time your traffic can compound to the point where you are getting sales for free! This is a magical thing, and well worth pursuing if you’re passionate about your topic.
If you’re not, it’s a long road which is much more difficult if you are indifferent to the topic you’re writing about. A mentor of mine recently mentioned this quote who I forget is from:
“The person who enjoys walking will travel further than the one who wants the destination”.
I like this quote and I think it relates well to blogging. If you’re not going to enjoy the journey of blogging, pick a different route. It can take a long time, and if you’re looking for results before you’ve started, you’re missing the journey!
How To Make A Profitable Website: The High Ticket Sales Funnel
One of the best ways to profit from a website is to sell high ticket products from it. Even with only a few sales of a high ticket product, you stand to earn more in commissions than from many low value sales. With a high ticket sales funnel, you can sell multiple products through a product range (or suite). A product range allows you to sell:
- A low “entry level product”
- A mid ticket offer – which you offer to customers of your entry level product
- A high ticket offer – offered to customers of your mid ticket offer
- Subscription products – membership products which pay recurring commissions
The high ticket sales funnel is one of the best ways to start an online business from scratch and profit from a website. With the most profitable digital products, this gives you the greatest potential for a profit when starting from scratch. Join a program which offers a range of products, gives you access to software, website builders and coaches and mentors. With a high ticket product range, it’s much easier to profit while using paid marketing methods, which of course is much faster and more scalable than marketing a website organically. You’ll still need to do this, of course, even with a high ticket sales funnel up your sleeve. But your profits are likely to be much larger, especially when you start selling high ticket affiliate products. High ticket affiliate products give you much larger gains than your average e-commerce store would. If you’re going the paid marketing route, it’s definitely worth using them in addition to subscription affiliate products, which pay recurring commissions.
